THE ARTIST: Fernand Lungren

THE PAINTING: In the Café, 1882–84;  a French Impressionistic oil on canvas painting, birthed in Paris, France, in 1882, in close proximity to Académie Julian, where the artist attended school for a short period.  He paints a previously unlikely scene of a lone socialite enjoying a new modern cultural idea of leisure in public locals, with warm yet vibrant tones of earthy reds and browns.  The spectacular contrast is attributed to the artist's well known ability to recreate the effects of lighting.
